Connecting Students with Stem through birds

Launched in 2016, Connecting Students with STEM through Birds allows Georgia Audubon to work with up to two federally-designated Title I schools during each academic year. The program is comprehensive, addressing the needs of students, teachers, the school, and the local neighborhood.
Today’s youth will grow up to become tomorrow’s policy experts, decision makers, and community advocates. By creating a bird-friendly habitat at the school, Georgia Audubon is providing a means for the students and the community to learn more about the natural world around them. As students and educators learn more about their local ecosystems and the issues affecting them, they naturally become better environmental stewards.
As part of the year-long program, each school receives field guides and environmental-themed children’s books for the library; a class set of binoculars; installation of a bird-friendly outdoor learning space; complete sets of our Learning About Birds curriculum; and teacher training on how to utilize the outdoor learning space, curriculum, and other resources. Additionally, Georgia Audubon staff assist with a community volunteer work day to install the outdoor learning space and conduct student programming throughout the school year.
To date, Georgia Audubon has worked with eleven schools through the Connecting Students with STEM through Birds Program, including Boyd Elementary, Carrollton Elementary, Cleveland Academy, Continental Colony Elementary, Crawford Long Middle School, Emma Hutchinson Elementary, Fickett Elementary, Heritage Academy, Main Street Academy, South Atlanta High School, and Usher-Collier Elementary.
Connecting Students with STEM through Birds is made possible with generous funding through the Morgens West Foundation, Wells Fargo Foundation, and Georgia Audubon members.
